Today we’ll be discussing velcro cable ties, which can come in extremely handy around the house in a variety of situations. Typically velcro cable ties are used to contain ugly cables that would otherwise ruin the visual appeal of a room, however, they are so versatile and flexible they can be used in 101 different ways.
Velcro cable ties are typically made of nylon and come in one of two arrangements: 8 inch straps or rolls starting around 5 feet long. In general the rolls are cheaper, however, they do not contain the eyelet loopholes that make strips so popular. They also come in a variety of colors beyond black, including blue, red, yellow, orange and others.
The most common use for cable ties includes hiding cable behind: LCD, LED or plasma TVs, washing machines and dryers, home audio system or gaming entertainment systems, electronic devices and computers. Their use does not stop there, however.
Velcro Cable Ties – Not Just for Cables
Velcro cable ties can be used around the house in a variety of ways that do not involve hiding cables. Because of their flexibility and short length, the ties can be used to:
- hold things together on boats, jet skis, RVs, ATVs and the like
- hold together key chains used by various members of the family
- to organize free weights in a home gym
Velcro cable ties can also be used in industrial applications, including: server rooms with hundreds or thousands of feet of cable, on a movie or photography set, or for product identification, as some brands create a ‘writing space’ on the side of the ties.
Because the ties are so easy to make there are dozens of brands to choose from. With that said, not all cable ties are created equally, as continually ripping the velcro off it’s base will result in the loss of the fibers that catch the velcro itself. When this happens, the velcro loses it’s grip. This is where having a higher quality set of ties becomes important.
Velcro Cable Ties – Brands
The most popular brand among consumers seems to be the Velcro Self-Gripping Cable Ties, made by Velcro. These ties have a 4.7/5 rating on Amazon and sell for $6.99 for a pack of 100 black, 8 inch ties. It should be noted that they do not offer colored ties.
The 3/4 inch, 15 foot Velcro Cable Tie Roll also seems to be popular amongst consumers with a 4.2/5 rating. This simple black roll requires cutting, however, it does not limit you to the 8 inches most pre-cut ties do.
Parts Express manufacturers some of the more colorful bands available, however they do not have any consumer reviews available as of this writing.
It should be noted that a basic Google search for cable ties will show both velcro cable ties AND plastic cable ties. Plastic cable ties are different, and can typically only be used once. If you are not sure of the difference, plastic cable ties are similar to the plastic handcuffs police use in riot situations.
