Today we’ll be discussing Keurig Coffee Maker Problems. As you probably know by now, Keurig is the new standard in home coffee brewing. Pop a cup into the machine and bravo: you have a delicious cup of coffee without the mess of coffee grounds, water filters and pots.
Further, brands like Target, Starbucks, Green Mountain Coffee, Gloria Jean’s, Tully’s, and more all make their own variety of K-cups. Given this, there is no denying these machines are here to stay. With that said, as is the case with most machines that involve liquids, these coffee makers do have their problems.
Some consumers have reported malfunctioning within the first 3 days of operating the machine. If the coffee maker sounds like it’s grinding after you insert the cup and press the button to begin the cycle, you may need to reset it (by opening and reclosing the lid) and fix it by giving it a little tap. Don’t hit the machine, just give it a light ping-pong tap on the area where you insert the cup. It should start back up right away.
Keurig Coffee Maker Problems…No Problem
If that doesn’t do the trick, you may have one of a few slightly more serious Keurig coffee maker problems on your hands. If resetting it and giving it a love tap doesn’t work, get a paper clip. The machine works by poking a hole in the top of the cup, flowing hot water through it, and then poking a hole in the bottom for it to filter out through into your coffee mug of choice. With that said, with repeated use the water hose may get clogged. Don’t worry, it’s a simple fix.
Take your paper clip and lift up the top part of the machine where you insert the K-cup. Find the top needle (which punctures the cup from the top so water can flow through it) and gently push your paper clip all the way up to clear it. Also make sure the water hose is clear while you’re on the top side.
From there (since we’re already doing heavy maintenance), go ahead and make sure the bottom needle is also clean and clear. Once again, gently make sure your paperclip goes right through, and never force it. Assuming your paperclip easily passes through both holes, you should be good to go.
Fixing Your Keurig Coffee Maker with a Toothbrush
For those of you using secondhand filters where you can use your own coffee grinds instead of the K-cups, you’ll want to focus on the water hose given there is no puncturing going on. Which leads to our second problem: the water reservoir.
If clearing the needles doesn’t work, it’s likely your water reservoir is clogged. This is also an easy fix. To remedy the situation, get an old toothbrush (Sonic Care electric toothbrushes work best, but are not required) and remove your water reservoir. On the bottom, where the reservoir would normally release water into the machine, you will see a micro-filter. Gently brush around the micro-filter to remove any potential build up. After, dry and re-insert the reservoir. If these three methods don’t work, well, hopefully you still have that receipt!
